Don’t Miss Your Opportunity: 4 Tips To Secure BEAD Funding

A close up of the US capitol building

It’s crunch time for broadband funding—the application phase for the $42.45 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program is fast approaching. Navigating the complexities of BEAD is challenging, particularly for smaller broadband service providers (BSPs). But not to worry, Calix is here to help BSPs of any size capitalize on this once-in-a-generation funding opportunity.

Shaping a "Broadband for All" Future

The sheer scale of the BEAD program makes it stand out from all those that have come before. Led by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories will provide funding to supply universal access to broadband, connecting every unserved and underserved location nationwide.

We’re now a couple of years into the BEAD program, and most states are well into the map challenge process, with some having completed the process already. Now, as we move into the pre-application and application phases, it’s critical that BSPs are ready to engage with their state broadband office and local communities. Calix and our specialist funding partners are here to help you at every step of the journey.

Here are four ways you can maximize your chances of BEAD success:

  1. Tailor-made planning tools empower BSPs to effectively apply for and secure BEAD funding. Calix partners with industry specialists like Ready.net to boost BSPs’ success rates. Ready.net simplifies the application process by integrating diverse data sources, such as speed tests, census details, demographic data, and so much more, showcasing BSPs’ opportunity and eligibility for awards.

  2. Without in-house grant writing support, expert technical consulting resources can be a game changer. Completing a BEAD application can take over 100 hours, with success determined by both completeness and competitive differentiation. Here at Calix, we have a vast number of consultants that can provide comprehensive support throughout every stage of your project—from budgeting to environmental factors and technical certification—ensuring all bases are covered for a successful bid.

  3. State broadband offices are seeking BSPs that share their vision of enhancing lives through connectivity. Beyond the administrative hurdles, the BEAD program offers a meaningful opportunity to connect un(der)served communities and stimulate economic growth. Showcase the expertise of your project team and garner support from local community leaders to emphasize your commitment to delivering transformative results in your area.

  4. Don’t forget about BEAD reporting and compliance. Once funding is awarded, BSPs face 10 years of ongoing reporting—monthly, quarterly, bi-annually—to the federal government, NTIA, and NIST. Ready.net leverages their experience of working directly with over 20 state broadband offices to help BSPs meet all BEAD reporting requirements.

BEAD is the biggest funding opportunity of our lifetime—a chance to ensure no one is left behind. BSPs that can swiftly connect new broadband locations, adapt new designed on the fly, and proficiently evaluate ROI will be the ones to lead America’s broadband future!
