Lead the Digital Revolution by Building Stronger Communities

After two decades of rolling out fiber infrastructure, many local broadband service providers (BSPs) have built thriving residential businesses by delivering secure, reliable home internet. Now, the next exciting opportunity lies in expanding beyond the home to meet the needs of the wider community.

Subscribers Want More Community-Wide Services

A recent independent survey of 1,000 residential subscribers from urban, suburban, and rural households across the U.S. revealed that consumers increasingly want to extend their connected experience beyond their homes:

  • 57 percent were somewhat or extremely likely to use community-wide Wi-Fi

  • 62 percent were willing to pay for community-wide Wi-Fi access

  • 53 percent said free Wi-Fi at community events was very or extremely important

The survey also highlighted significant growth opportunities in residential services. For instance, 82 percent of respondents were families with a strong interest in services like parental controls (63 percent) and social media monitoring (49 percent). Easy-to-deploy services like ExperienceIQ® or Bark can help bridge the gap between current BSP offerings and subscriber expectations.

Societal Impact as a Key Differentiator

Implementing a differentiated offering strategy allows BSPs to deliver transformative societal change. From protecting teens on social media to breathing life into recreational activities with connected parks, sports fields, and community events, local BSPs can improve community well-being in ways Tier 1 competitors cannot.

Take Tombigbee Fiber in rural Mississippi, for example. Through Calix SmartTown™, Tombigbee provides free, secure, reliable Wi-Fi to 68 first responder organizations, with plans to extend this service to 43 volunteer fire stations. Tombigbee’s impact extends well beyond its customer base by enhancing lifesaving emergency services for tens of thousands of residents. They’ve also connected all high school fields in their service area and launched Bark at no extra cost to keep families safe, redefining their role in the community.
