Network Innovation at Speed: Three Areas Where Service Providers Benefit

Two IT professionals using network innovation to swiftly implement new technologies in a server room

Broadband network and services technology is constantly evolving with innovations that focus on helping broadband service providers (BSPs) achieve business goals and enhance the subscriber experience. For BSPs, it can be hard to keep up—and even harder to integrate and operationalize new technology and capabilities. In today’s fast-moving, competitive market, it’s time that BSPs can’t afford to waste.

That’s where the Calix Broadband Platform provides a competitive advantage, enabling BSPs to integrate and operationalize new technologies faster than ever.

The core of our approach is our operating systems, which feature a modular architecture, hardware independence, software abstraction, and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) interfaces. These elements allow for the seamless integration of new technologies without disrupting ongoing operations. We achieve this through a unique software implementation between the physical network hardware and the operating system (OS), creating separate layers for hardware and software. This design enables us to quickly adapt interfaces and workflows to accommodate different network configurations, allowing BSPs to innovate rapidly and accelerate the time to market.

Three Network Areas That Benefit From Innovation

With the platform approach, BSPs gain advantages from new hardware, software, and telemetry innovations.

  • Hardware: Calix recently introduced new double-density XGS-PON interfaces for our Intelligent Access™ systems. This game-changer allows sustainable connections with more subscribers within the same service footprint without increasing power, space, or cooling requirements. BSPs can add the new hardware at speed, without affecting operations, using the same operating system and capabilities. The OSS/BSS environment does not need to know about the underlying technology, and all the operational interfaces and workflows remain the same. That means BSPs can introduce double-density XGS-PON interfaces within weeks (compared to months or more with traditional access networks) and focus efforts on validating functionality against service plans.

  • Software: Calix introduces new capabilities and innovations on our award-winning network innovation platform, AXOS, every 91 days. With four release cycles each year, we deliver innovations four times faster than traditional access network solutions, which typically only provide annual software updates.  For BSPs using the Calix Broadband Platform, implementing new capabilities is straightforward! BSPs can launch new services by utilizing existing workflows and operational models, such as XGS-PON, which allows for the rapid integration and operationalization of symmetrical multi-gig services.

  • Telemetry: The platform’s real-time telemetry gathering makes it unique, enabling actionable insights based on network and service data. For instance, Calix Operations Cloud uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict potential service-impacting events that can be proactively addressed before they impact network performance—enabling a superior customer experience.

Operations Cloud consistently introduces new capabilities that provide actionable insights for proactive network monitoring and reporting as part of its quarterly release cycle. This approach helps reduce outages, improve the mean time to repair (MTTR), and improve service availability. Network and operations teams can diagnose issues faster and enhance service quality by gaining deeper insights into network traffic and subscriber usage trends.

Whether it’s a new piece of hardware, a software innovation, or the opportunity to roll out a new managed service, BSPs on the Calix Broadband Platform will always be able to rapidly operationalize new technology and stay one step ahead of the competition.
